Schoep has passed away one month after his 20th birthday. He and his guardian John Unger came to the public’s attention after a heartwarming photograph by Hannah Stonehouse Hudson went viral on the Internet last year. The senior dog suffered from arthritis and John would carry Schoep to Lake Superior every night. The water would soothe Schoep’s arthritic bones and help him fall asleep. After people learned Schoep’s story donations poured in from dog lovers around the world and John was able to take Schoep for special joint laser treatments to ease his arthritic pain. The treatments helped the dog rescued from a shelter regain his energy. After treatments, Schoep could walk more easily and sleep through the night. As John continued to receive donations he, his veterinarian Dr. Haukass, and Hannah Stonehouse Hudson decided to establish the Schoep Legacy Foundation. The charity helps dogs and their guardians in a variety of ways, including helping low-income families care for their dogs.
